Child Support Payments and U.S. Passport Applications
If you owe $2,500 or more in child support you will not be eligible to receive a U.S. Passport.
In order to process your application and receive your passport, you will first need to clear these back payments by making arrangements to pay the state where child support is owed BEFORE submitting your passport application.
To clear your child support arrears and be approved to receive a passport you must:
Contact the state agency that you owe child support to and arrange payment
Next, the state’s Child Support Enforcement Agency must report that your payment has been made to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
After this, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will remove your name from the outstanding arrears list and will then provide the updated list to the Department of State
Finally, once Passport Services have received the updated list and verified that your name no longer appears on it they will then be able to process your application
Be aware, once these child support payments have been made it may take 2-3 weeks before Passport Services will be permitted to process your application. If you have any questions regarding a child support payment, please contact the appropriate state child support enforcement agency.
Important Notes:
We have no information regarding your child support obligations.
The U.S. Department of State will be unable to process your passport until the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has removed your name from its list of outstanding arrears.
All information above is detailed in Section 51.60 (a) (2) of Title 22 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
